A review of Gmail’s new contact photos feature

I hesitate to write a new “The verdict is in” post so soon after the previous entry, but this merits some attention. So, without further ado, I present:

Case No. 6743-11187E: Gmail contact photos
So far, I think it sucks. All I want to do is add my own photo to my contact information. I chose a good photo, and, since no guidelines are given, I gave it what I think are reasonable dimensions to start with (400 square pixels). I clicked the upload button. I was redirected to a new page that resized my browser (which cost Google 5,000 points right away as I hate when Web sites mess with my space) and told me I had to crop my photo. There was a little square that I could drag around my photo to choose where I wanted to crop it. The problem was, the square was so small that I could maybe fit one of my eyes and my nose in it. I wasn’t thrilled with those results, so I resized my photo myself, dropping it down to 200 square pixels. I assumed this would let me fit more of my face in the crop tool. Wrong. When it came time to crop the photo, the square was now proportionately smaller. I swear they did it just to annoy me. The help file is no help at all. So far I haven’t found anyone else complaining about this on the Web, so maybe I’m just a dolt who can’t figure it out. Either way, thumbs down, Google. You won’t catch me using a picture of one-quarter of my face on Gmail.

The verdict is in

Case No. 3557-12983E: Cherry Vanilla Dr. Pepper
The verdict: Tastes just like regular Dr. Pepper. Don’t bother.

Case No. 4163-65521E: Spicy Chicken Burrito
The verdict: Presumably a limited time offering from Taco Bell. Tastes pleasingly familiar, yet distinct. Tortilla filled to somewhat meager standards, however a few bites are convincing enough to set burrito aside and save for last.
